      Shoulder & Upper Extremity Fellowship

Two fellows each year participate in advanced training in shoulder, elbow and hand reconstruction. They have the opportunity to evaluate and treat upper extremity conditions with five physicians in private practice with an academic emphasis. Tertiary reconstructive and revision problems predominate the clinical care in this highly specialized practice.

      About the Program

Fellows attend orthopaedic clinics, open and arthroscopic surgeries, participate in the clinic’s journal clubs, teaching conferences, anatomy labs, and industry‑sponsored workshops. They are expected to prepare publication-quality research involving clinical series from an established database, anatomical dissections and assist in the preparation of lectures for national and international orthopedic meetings.

In the shoulder and elbow practice, the focus is on complicated reconstructions and revision arthroplasty of the shoulder and elbow involving bone and muscle deficits. This is supplemented with the treatment of more routine arthritis, rotator cuff pathology, instability, and fracture sequelae. Anatomic and reverse arthroplasty uses are well covered during the year. Bone defects of the humerus, glenoid, and ulna requiring innovative reconstructions, are common.

For the hand and wrist experience Drs. McCarroll and Redlin use the latest techniques of wrist arthroscopy, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, reconstruction of congenital hand anomalies, and nerve repairs. This practice is supplemented with the routine treatment for Dupuytren contracture, arthritis, and trauma.

There are additional research opportunities in arthroplasty retrievals through a partnership with the Medical Polymers Group at UC Berkeley. There are also opportunities for pediatric focused projects through Shriners Hospital at UC Davis and anatomical projects thru the Tornier and Arthrex labs available to all fellows.

This program does not qualify fellows to take the Certificate of Added Qualifications for Hand Surgery. It is part of the ASES match. Interviews are conducted Labor Day through Thanksgiving. Invited applicants may arrange for interviews by calling contact person, Chris Jara.
