      Faculty Spotlight

      Alan Newman, MD

      Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Residency Training Program

      Dr. Alan Newman joined California Pacific Medical Center July 1, 2014. A native of Little Rock, AR, Dr. Newman joins CPMC from Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he was Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Director of the Psychiatry Residency Program, and Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Program. Dr. Newman was previously at Tulane University, where he served as the Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship and Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry. Dr. Newman completed medical school and psychiatry residency at the University of Arkansas, and fellowship training in Forensic Neuropsychiatry at Tulane University.

      Dr. Newman is a nationally-known educator in forensic psychiatry. In addition to his roles as Department Chair and Program Director, Dr. Newman provides training to CPMC residents in criminal and civil forensic psychiatry, risk management, and treatment of suicidal behaviors.

      Joule Adler, MD

      Attending Psychiatrist and Core Faculty Member

      Dr. Adler attended medical school at the University of California, Irvine and residency at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Adler is a leader in the development and implementation of electronic health records. Dr. Adler heads the consult service at CPMC Davies Campus, a service that focuses on neuropsychiatric, geriatric, and addiction disorders. Areas of expertise include psychosomatic medicine and cross-cultural psychiatry.

      Jeremy E. Bornstein, PhD

      Chief Psychologist and Director of Psychology Training Programs

      Dr. Bornstein is a member of the Department of Psychiatry core faculty and oversees psychology training. His professional interests are in rehabilitation neuropsychology, health psychology, and the development of interdisciplinary models of care.

      Mary Burke, MD

      Medical Director, Psychiatry Women's Health

      Dr. Burke heads up psychiatric services at the CPMC 1580 Valencia Family Clinic including teaching psychiatry residents in a primary care setting. In addition to implementing evidence-based care for major mental illness, her primary focus areas include infant-parent therapy and women’s mental health, working with parents with histories of trauma or mental illness who want to work specifically on parenting. Dr. Burke completed residency and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at University of California San Francisco and continues her lifelong education with interests in the environment, PTSD and child development.

      H. Paul Chin, MD

      Vice Chair, Department of Psychiatry

      Dr. Chin is a member of the Core Faculty and Attending psychiatrist on the Inpatient service. He teaches didactic teaching in Emergency Psychiatry, Psychosomatics, Cross-Cultural Psychiatry. He is a Caseload Supervisor for the PGY-4 residents. Dr. Chin received his BS at Stanford University, his Medical Degree at the University of California at San Francisco and UCSF Department of Psychiatry (Residency).

      Kathleen Fahrner, PhD

      Director of Child and Adolescent Psychology Training

      Dr. Fahrner is a member of the Department of Psychiatry core faculty and oversees the Child and Adolescent Psychology Training Program. She specializes play therapy for children presenting with neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and other psychiatric disorders.

      Lisa Koshkarian, PhD

      Psychology Supervisor and Coordinator for Adult Psychology Therapy Training

      Dr. Koshkarian is a member of the Department of Psychiatry core faculty and specializes in teaching contemporary relational psychoanalytic theories from feminist and diversity perspectives.

      Jeremy Parker, MD

      CPMC Consult Liaison Psychiatrist and Clinical Educator

      Dr. Parker joined the CPMC Psychiatry Department in July of 2018. Dr. Parker received his medical degree from Brown University, completed his psychiatry residency at CPMC, and his Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship at Oregon Health and Sciences University. The Psychiatry Department is happy to have Dr. Parker back and looks forward to his valuable perspective on the residency.

      Robert Riddell, PsyD

      Psychology Supervisor and Coordinator for Psychology Assessment Training

      Dr. Riddell is a member of the Department of Psychiatry core faculty and specializes in neuropsychological assessment, consultation-liaison psychology and integrative psychotherapy approaches.

      Robert A. Root, MD

      Associate Director, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

      Dr. Root trained at the Yale University School of Medicine and then the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center for his psychiatry residency. Dr. Root completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Seattle Children’s’ Hospital. Dr. Root is currently the medical director of the training program for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He also teaches a weekly seminar. He works closely with the Department of Pediatrics and is a consultant to the Child Development Center at CPMC. He supervises residents and psychology interns in child and adult psychiatry.

      Michael N. Valan, MD

      Director, Consultation Psychiatry Service

      Dr. Valan is the Medical Director of the Psychosomatic Medicine, and course director of the Psychosomatic Medicine seminar.

      Stephanie D. Wilson, MD

      Medical Director, Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Services
      Dartmouth Clerkship Site Director

      Dr. Wilson joined CPMC in the spring of 2016. Her previous employment includes work at The Urgent Care Clinic at the District of Colombia Superior Court and as a chief medical officer at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Wilson completed a forensic fellowship at Georgetown University after her residency training at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At CPMC, Dr. Wilson serves as the Medical Director of the adult inpatient psychiatry unit and maintains an adult outpatient practice. She is also the psychiatry site director for medical students from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth University. Dr. Wilson is actively involved in medical student and resident education.

      Dongmei Yue, MD

      Staff Psychiatrist and Core Faculty Member

      Dr. Yue supervises residents on a weekly basis for their outpatient cases. She teaches child psychiatry courses for PGY-2 and 3 residents and supervises PGY-2 residents for their child psychiatry rotation at the Child Development Center at CPMC.

      Janos Zahajszky, MD

      Associate Program Director, Psychiatry Residency Training Program
      Medical Director and Service Chief, Outpatient Mental Health Clinic

      As an attending psychiatrist and member of the core faculty, Dr. Zahajszky supervises residents in the Outpatient Department, is the intake supervisor and caseload supervisor for PGY3 residents. In addition, Dr Zahajszky is the chief resident supervisor as well as an instructor for PGY2 and PGY3 Psychopharmacology courses. Dr. Zahajszky graduated from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York after receiving his B.A. from Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
