      Rotations and Call

      Resident Year I

      • Medicine — four months:  three months adult and one month of adolescent medicine. Two months of adult medicine with the Internal Medicine team at CPMC, one month of medicine at San Francisco Free Clinic and one month of pediatric medicine at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.
      • Neurology — two months: one month at Highland Hospital working with a combination of consult and outpatient work with a broad spectrum of neuropathology and one month with CPMC Neurological Stroke Services.
      • Psychiatry — six months: two three-month blocks on the CPMC Adult Inpatient Service treating a broad range of acute psychopathy and management of emergency and acute psychiatric issues.
      • Call — Weekend day shift while working on the CPMC Adult Inpatient Service (Three months in the first half of the year.)  Night float while on the CPMC Adult Inpatient Service. (Three months in the second half of the year.)

      Resident Year II

      • Adult Inpatient Psychiatry — three months
      • General Psychosomatic Medicine — three months
      • Emergency and Acute Stabilization Consultation-Liaison — three months
      • Sub-Specialty Psychiatry — three months.  Neuropsychiatry and geriatric-focused psychiatry are the focus of this rotation.  In addition, residents begin work on their QI project which may be short or may be a longer-term work that stretches into the PGY-3 year.

      Resident also start training is psychodynamic therapy and develop a small outpatient load.

      • Call — ~four times per month

      Resident Year III

      • Adult Outpatient Psychiatry — nine months.  Education in the CPMC Adult Outpatient Mental Health Clinic includes in-depth training in evaluation, differential treatment formulation, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy and child/adolescent psychiatry.
      • Child Adolescent Psychiatry — two months. Training with CPMC’s child psychiatrists at the CPMC Kalmanovitz Child Development Center and working on the Child and Adolescent Consultation Liaison service at CPMC’s California campus.
      • Adult Outpatient Psychiatry in sub-specialty areas — one month. Forensic Tele psychiatry at San Quentin Prison, Geriatric Psychiatry at the CPMC Ray Dolby Brain Health Center, Addictions Psychiatry at Healthright 360, and Collaborative Care Psychiatric Training at CPMC 899 Valencia Primary Care Clinic located by Mission Bernal Campus.

      Residents continue or complete work on their QI project.  In addition, residents are assigned a mentor for their PGY-4 year Grand Rounds presentation and preparations start with supervision.

      • Call — ~two times per month

      Resident Year IV

      • Chief Resident — residents elect a chief resident(s) managing a specific service in the Psychiatry Department such as Outpatient Mental Health or Emergency and Acute Stabilization Consultation.
      • Outpatient Psychiatry — ten months
      • Electives — two months

      Research opportunities are individually arranged and depends on the interests and commitment of the individual. A research course is offered to all senior residents at CPMC through the Quality Improvement Department.

      Residents complete work on their Grand Rounds and present to the psychiatry community.

      • Call — ~1-2 times per month. Act as mentors, call-buddies, and backup for PGY1-3 residents.
