Message from the Chief Residents
Welcome to Sutter Sacramento/Davis and thank you for considering our residency program.
We have so many passionate faculty, adjunct faculty and volunteer teachers. Because we are unopposed, we are the only residency in our hospitals, giving us the opportunity to be directly involved in all our patients’ care. Beyond the residency experience, Sacramento and Davis have been great cities to live in – plenty of fun sports, concerts and outdoor adventures.
“I visited programs from all corners of the US during my path to residency, but Sutter ultimately became my top choice because--ambitious though it may sound--this truly is a program where you can become anyone. We have the training and opportunities to make excellent family physicians, and the foundation of support and care that make it possible to grow. On one hand, we get solid bread-and-butter family medicine with a wide variety of patients and thorough inpatient training. At the same time, there is such a diverse array of options available to us both in-house with our faculty, and independently due to a flexible and customizable curriculum. Our faculty are not only supportive, but maintain their own independent interests including but not limited to obstetrics, ELOA/Death with Dignity, HIV/AIDS medicine, transgender care, and buprenorphine/Suboxone training. By continuing to cultivate their individual niches, they become an enormous resource for residents looking for a mentor in specific specialties within FM. For those of us with interests outside of our local resources, this program is very invested in helping residents to find those opportunities and to build the framework necessary to get the training we desire.
I think our program truly embodies that fearless and determined spirit of family medicine-- constantly learning more and searching to do better for those we take care of.“
Esther Lin, M.D. 2020-21 Chief Resident, Sacramento Track
“I have been very happy with my training here and think we offer excellent training. We are exposed to a wide variety of patient populations and broad spectrum family medicine and yet still have the time and resources to explore our own particular interests. I love being able to take advantage of that and being in an environment where it is actually encouraged. Our faculty are incredibly supportive and want us to have the individual experiences we each desire.
Aside from the wide breadth of educational opportunities, continuity and community are the heart of our program. It can make all the difference to a patient who is hospitalized to see a familiar face and those are the special moments that have made this worth it for me. Our program itself is like a family and we spend a ton of time together from weekly trivia, going to the midtown farmer’s market together, and having tons of meals together. Having those relationships with my co-residents and the overall environment of trust, respect, and support from our faculty have made my training feel much more personal and tailored towards me and my needs. I would without a doubt recommend this program to anyone.”
