Message from the Chief Residents
Welcome to Sutter Sacramento/Davis and thank you for considering our residency program.
We have so many passionate faculty, adjunct faculty and volunteer teachers. Because we are unopposed, we are the only residency in our hospitals, giving us the opportunity to be directly involved in all our patients’ care.
Beyond the residency experience, Sacramento and Davis have been great cities to live in – plenty of fun sports, concerts and outdoor adventures.
“This is an excellent program. Both our inpatient and outpatient training
is very strong, and I feel comfortable managing common and even some less common complaints
in family medicine—this is including great training in OB and psychiatry within
primary care. However, our real strength lies in our flexibility—we have the
opportunity to participate in ELOA, the full spectrum of reproductive health (including
termination training), suboxone training/ addiction medicine, transgender medicine
and HIV medicine just within our continuity clinic. Not to mention, we do a TON of
procedures. The culture of the residency and the supportive faculty and staff make
it easy to pursue your dreams—plus we have enough work-life balance that we
have the energy to pursue them. 10/10, would recommend.”
Xaunna Krehn, M.D. 2019-20 Chief Resident, Sacramento Track
“I’d like to echo everything Dr. Krehn outlined in her statement;
we have access to a diverse patient population and the opportunities (and time!) to
pursue various areas of interest in family medicine. We also have a ton of fun together.
From going to comedy shows, to group river floats, trivia with our attendings and
dungeons and dragons nights, we all enjoy spending time with each other, which makes
residency feel more like family. For the Davis track in particular, I love having
the ability to walk across the parking lot and see my patients on L&D or in the
ICU when I have a break in my clinic day or once I’m done with work. The small
community feel and close working relationship with physicians in the area has made
my training more personal and meaningful, while still having access to all of the
higher level specialty care and learning in Sacramento.”
Kristine Meade, D.O. 2019-20 Chief Resident, Davis Track

Xaunna Krehn (PGY1)
"It's clear that they care about resident wellness, not only in terms of work/life balance, but also in the passion they show in cultivating our professional interests. The faculty/staff are extremely responsive to feedback, and the overall culture of the program is super supportive."
Andy Brothers (Core Faculty)
"I feel a deep connection to this impressive and diverse group of individuals supporting each other and making the world a better place."
Schuyler Wood, MD (Graduate)
"Of all the 11 programs I visited, I got a subtle sense of tremendous pride and well-being from among the residents at Sutter. That instinct served me well. I know Sutter FMRP was the best possible choice I could have made."
Silen Bun, MD (Graduate)
"I rotated here as a medical student and I love the people and my experience. It felt like a family and everyone really cared about my learning and happiness. I knew that I would get the same experience as a resident, and I did!"
Elizabeth Ward Pham, MD (Graduate)
"I wanted an unopposed family medicine residency program, where I would have a high level of responsibility for patient care across all medical disciplines in the context of a supportive and caring team. I graduated in 2006, and I am grateful for my excellent residency training every day."
