      About the Residency Program

Located in Northern California, Sutter Roseville Medical Center is a community hospital focused on the future and patient-centered care. The Sutter Roseville Medical Center Residency Program is dedicated to promoting a learning environment that prepares future physicians to provide high-quality medical care.

Repeatedly recognized as one of the top hospitals in California, Sutter Roseville’s 382-bed medical center serves 10 counties in the greater Sacramento area and offers a full range of healthcare services. It’s home to a Level II trauma center, a Level III NICU, the Sutter Rehabilitation Institute and a Joint Commission-recognized Primary Stroke Center. In 2020, a carefully designed, patient-focused 98,000 square-foot expansion opened to meet the growing needs of Roseville and nearby communities.

      The Sutter Health Network

Sutter Roseville Medical Center is part of the award-winning Sutter Health integrated network of care. Nearly three million patients benefit from connected care at affiliated facilities across the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. Sutter’s decades-long investment in graduate-level medical education and established institutional accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) provide a solid foundation for new residency programs at Sutter Roseville. Existing residency programs within the health system include family medicine in Sacramento, Davis, Amador and Santa Rosa, as well as internal medicine, ophthalmology and psychiatry at CPMC.

The leadership, providers and staff in the Sutter Health network are committed to fostering a positive, supportive environment for training tomorrow’s successful physicians. Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Sutter Health advance and encourage a culturally diverse and inclusive environment with a focus on recruitment, selection and retention of a diverse cohort, who are all empowered to reach their full potential.

      Surgery Residency Program

Residents in the program will have access to the tools they need in a learning environment that prepares future physicians to provide safe, high quality surgical care. The residents joining now, as we begin the program, will also have the unique opportunity to help shape what is expected to be a premier residency led by renowned trauma surgeon Jon Perlstein, M.D, FACS. Learn about the curriculum and didactic activities.

The program’s primary site is Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The medical center houses 10 main operating rooms as well as two surgery centers with five ORs in each. Surgery residents will also rotate to nearby Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, California Pacific Medical Center in the Bay Area and Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. At SMCS, residents will gain experience in surgical oncology. At CPMC, residents will gain experience in transplant and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. At Stanford, residents will receive training in pediatric surgery.  At each location, residents will train under board-certified and licensed physicians.
